Second Grade Curriculum Language Arts Reading Students will understand and apply the knowledge of letters, sounds and words to become independent and fluent readers. They will read with fluency and comprehension. *Identify the author and illustrator *Use table of contents and glossary *Decode multi-syllable words *Add or delete a letter to make a new word *Read fluently with attention to expression, voice tone, and rhythm
*Recall facts and details *Sequence information in a story *Make inferences and support with details *Identify the main idea and details of a story *Identify cause and effect *Locate information using alphabetical order Students will write in clear, concise language *Students will alphabetize by the third letter *Apply phonics rule for longvowels *Form contractions *Use nouns (common, proper, singular, and plural), verbs, and adjectives correctly *Use correct punctuation *Write a paragraph
Students will speak in clear and concise language. *Students will retell a story sequentially Students will listen actively to information *Follow two step oral directions *Students will listen to identify main ideas and supporting details Spelling *Spell assigned words (12 per week) *Applies phonetic knowledge to spelling

Math Students will develop number sense and an ability to represent numbers in a variety of forms: *Recognize and order number words through 20 *Read, compare and order numbers to 100 **Understand base ten “10 ones= 1 ten; 10 ten = 1 hundred; 10 hundreds = 1000 *Use the words higher, lower, greater, and less to compare two numbers *Skip count to 100 by 2, 5 10 *Skip count by 3 and 4 for multiplication readiness **Explore the meanings of multiplication and division *Name the number before, after, and between a given number *Name odd and even numbers *Identify and order ordinal positions to 20th *Identify proper fractions with the denominators of 2, 3, 4, 8, 10 *Count money using dollars and coins *To problem solve addition and subtraction word problems *To insert correct operation signs (+/-) **To demonstrate accuracy and fluency of addition and subtraction facts up to 18 **Addition and subtraction with and without regrouping *To estimate without counting

Homework • About 30 minutes of homework every night except Friday. 20 minutes of reading is highly recommended. • Homework is to be done in pencil, neatly. • All homework is to be signed by a parent.
