History of the Song • “Yankee Doodle” has been a well known song for about 300 years! • The British played the tune during the French & Indian War to make fun of unsophisticated New Englanders, "Yankees," whom they considered the "country bumpkins," or the "doodles."
More Info on “Yankee Doodle” • According to tradition, American bands played "Yankee Doodle" when the British surrendered at York Town, Virginia in 1781 • Today, “Yankee Doodle” is known as the state anthem of Connecticut. • The implication of the verse: Stuck a feather in his hat and called it macaroni meant that sticking a feather in his hat made him a height of fashion
