Change from the country to downtown London By Omar Chaouch Block E
Introduction • I decided to choose the subject of differentiation between the Country and Downtown London. I chose this subject because it is obvious to everyone that the setting of the book changed Pips ideas going from a poor person to a rich person. Also the atmosphere changes from the country to downtown in many different ways. Throughout this presentation I will be discussing the difference between life downtown and life in the country.
In the country side • For Pip living in the countryside was the beginning of his life. He was raised in a small village in which his sister Mrs. Joe took care of him. His family was pretty poor in which his sister would only pay for what they need. Their lifestyle is very simple. Mrs. Joe does not work and stays home. Her husband Joe is a blacksmith who only gets enough money to feed the family. You can feel that the lifestyle these people have is very simple and basic. Another important thing that is in the country side is that the social class of the majority of the people is that they are all poor people who are not entitled to many things. Since the people in this place are poor there is limited transportation in the small town.
Downtown • When Pip first arrived in Downtown he was living the rich life in which he was entightled to a lot of money and learning to become a true gentleman. In downtown there are many different people, depending on their social class, financial status and reputation. But what is also important in downtown London is the opportunity people have to do what they want.
Opportunities in London for education • There are many more opportunities for a better education in most big cities. In a small town there are very few opportunities for an education.
New living arrangements • In the small towns of England, the people usually live in small houses where there is a small yard. In these small houses the interior is usually in bad condition. In the city there many different living arrangements for these people. Some people have large homes but many live in apartments due to the crowded conditions. The interiors of these apartments varies depending on the person’s budget.
Meet new people (Network) • In the country there are limited connections for business, socializing, friends and education. Due to the poverty of most of the population if the people in the country there is no time to socialize, but enough time to go to work and provide food for your family. In contrast, in the city, one has many new opportunities in business, social life, friends and education. One could see a diverse environment with many classes of people. One could also see more crime in the city. From the business point of view, one could have the opportunity of finding a better job.
Expenses • In the country there is not many things that you can do without having a well suited financial budget. Even if you were quite wealthy in the country there is not many things that you can buy due to the lack of staying up to daye with places like downtown London. In downtown London the people are always knowing what's new in either fashion or the interior designing of houses. That is why in the cities rich people can go in debt for buying too many things, like Dickens father who went to debtors prison for overspending.
Social Class • In the country side the social class of the people was mild to low. Meaning these people did not have any connections, family or property. They lived a very simple and straightforward life in which only food and a simple shelter were good enough for them to live. On the other hand in downtown London the social class is either low normal or high. And if you have a high social class In downtown people look at you in a high way and you are respected.
Transportation In the countryside the form of transportation that is used is horses and limited use of station wagons. In the country they used the types of vehicles that were used for agricultural and labor reasons. These were early types of trucks and station wagons which made farmers lives easier all together. For people in downtown the vehicles tend to be more elegant and are easy for the general public to get from point A to B. This means these vehicles tend to be smaller and more basic than the transportation that is used in the country. The most common form of transportation downtown would be the uses of transportation which in a that time period trains.
Jobs and oppurtunities In the countryside the jobs that are given fro people to do are very simple and more physical than educational. These jobs would be more like being a blacksmith or working in a farm. On the other hand in the city the jobs vary from what the people like to focus their studies on. The different branches that the people could be in his politics, economics and labour.
