Integrated Action „GEPF - Grid Enabling PC Farms“ • Coordinators • Industry Partners (many of them are SMEs) • users: Life Sciences, Chemical Industry, Flow Simulation, Oil Exploration, Drug Design, ... • technology providers: grid computing vendors, cluster software specialists, interconnect and networking specialists, ... • Academic Partners • from the fields of: high energy physics, climate modeling, earth observation, weather prediction, computer science, ... • countries: France, Israel, Spain, Bulgaria, Finland, GB, Switzerland, .., Japan, U.S., Australia KIP Heidelberg ZIB Berlin
Integrated Action „GEPF - Grid Enabling PC Farms“ The further breakthrough of Grid Computing requires reliable large-scale clusters! • Our Goal:A Grid-Enabled PC Farm out of the Box • autonomous and self-healing --> saves human maintenance cost • commodity components --> cheap • large scale (100s or 1000s of nodes) --> satisfies scientific compute demand • integrated HDD storage management --> substitutes archives • Grid-enabled cluster management --> extends OGSA to cluster level • Benefits • All Grid projects will benefit by our results! • e.g. DataGrid, GriPhyn, GridLab, GEO600, BioGrid, AstroGrid, DataTag, Crossgrid, ... • Expected savings: Several 100 Million € in hardware investment and personnel cost! • establish symbiosis with EDSN (European Distributed Supercomputer Network) proposal
