FUTURE WP4 • Observations: continue existing network • New measurements: • VOS line France-Brazil • New ship on UK-Caribbean • Replacement buoy: MINAS • New sensor in Western Eq Atlantic PIRATA mooring • New atmospheric measurements: Greenland, Weybourne
FUTURE WP5 • Continue to monitor fCO2 on ship lines and with carioca drifters • 2 more drifters will be deployed March 2008 in the Western Atlantic • Synthesis: • Mechanistic understanding of the relevant processes controlling observed and modeled pCO2 variability in association with in situ (e.g. ARGO mixed layer depth) and/or remote sensing measurements (ice cover, altimetry, sea surface temperature, ocean color, wind speed). • Link between high DIC close to SAF and formation of Subantarctic Mode Water (SAMW) in Winter
Decadal trends:Why different trends between Indian and Western Pacific Ocean ? (Metzl, 2007 sub.)
From decadal to inter-decadal trends of pCO2 A challenge for pCO2 synthesis and modelling pCO2 trends from ORCA LIM-PISCES model 1990-2001 1970s 1980s 1960s Lenton et al.
Future WP 6 • NA observing system synthesis: • Estimate NA sink 2005, 2006, 2007 with uncertainties • Reproduce/evaluate observing system strategy in model • Implications for atmospheric inversion estimates. • Paper on observing system and 2005 data to be submitted during 2008. • Neural network technique evaluation • Accuracy? • Use for inter-annual variability • Evaluate with model output? • Application of techniques to other areas (N Pacific? Southern Ocean? • Assimilation of CO2 data into Ocean BGCM (Hadley centre) • Direct assimilation of pCO2 data (AWI)
