By: Andrew Smith. The romanov dynasty. History of the Romanovs. The Romanov Dynasty began in 1613 and ended in 1917 with the Bolshevik Revolution. They got their name from Roman Yurev , whose daughter was the first wife of Ivan the Terrible. His grandkids took the name in honor of him.

History of the Romanovs • The Romanov Dynasty began in 1613 and ended in 1917 with the Bolshevik Revolution. • They got their name from Roman Yurev, whose daughter was the first wife of Ivan the Terrible. • His grandkids took the name in honor of him. • Later Michael Romanov one of his grandkids was elected the new tsar the first of the Romanov dynasty

Michael Romanov • The beginning of his reign marked the end of The Time of Troubles. • His first act as tsar was to clear Russian lands that other countries were occupying. •  The first task of the new tsar was to clear the land of the countries occupying it. • Sweden and Poland were then dealt with respectively by the peace of Stolbovoand the Truce of Deulino

Alexei MikhailovichRomanov • He acquired the throne after the death of his father Michael I when he was 16. • Alexei was committed to the care of the boyar, Boris Morozov, who was to help Alexei rule. • While at rule a truce was secured with Poland and complications with the Ottomans were avoided. • Morozov’s decisions became unfavorable and therefore caused the Salt Riot, forcing Alexei to exile him.

  5. Peter the Great • Peter attained the throne from Feodor III in 1682. He was Russia’s most influential Tsar. • He brought Russia out of the medieval age and modernized it into what it is today. • He started the Northern War which after victory gave Russia access to the Baltic Sea. • He also founded the city of Saint Petersburg, which is now one of the largest cities in Russia. • He also modernized the army, and created a navy for Russia.

  6. Catherine the Great • Catherine the Great was the most renowned and longest ruling female in Russian history. • Her reign started in 1762 following a coup d'état and assassination of her husband Peter III. • The reign of Catherine is considered to be the Golden Age of Russia. • She expanded Russia greatly west by capturing parts of Turkey, Poland,and Ukraine. • She westernized Russia by reforming education and the arts.
