Family life • Marcus Garvey was born on August 17,1887 he died on June 10, 194. He was born in St.Ann Bays Jamaica. He was the youngest child of 11 in stonemason. He went to local elementary school. In 1903 he went to the capital, Kingston, to work as a printer. He soon became involved in public activities and helped form the Printers Union, the first trade union in Jamaica. In 1907 he took part in the unsuccessful printer’s strike, where organized workers refused to work unless certain demands were met.

His achievement • 1920 Garvey was a Jamaican-born black nationalist who created a 'Back to Africa' movement in the United States. He became an inspirational figure for later civil rights activists • He returned to Jamaica in1914 and founded the (UNIA) Universal Nergo Improvement Association. In 1916 Garvey moved to Harlem in New York where UNIA thrived. By now a formidable public speaker, Garvey spoke across American.
