A staff is more than just lines and spaces. A staffhas a clef sign, time signature, bar lines, measures, notes,key signature, ledger lines, notes, rests, and lots of other stuff.

Time Signature Time signatures tell you how manybeatsand what kind of notesper measure there are. The top number tells you how many beats per measure. The bottomtells you that the quarter note ( ) equals 1 beat.

Musical Notes Notes look different so that we can distinguish them. They have parts which makes them different: head, stem, flag, beam, and dots. Look at the note chart: Which notes have stems? Which notes have flags? Which note has just a head? What two notes are not colored in? Which note do you think equals 1 beat?
