Multimedia Orientation for ESL Students Ali Mageehon Umpqua Community College
The Program • 800 students annually; approximately 300 GED graduates per year • Mandatory orientation, advising, assessment • Pre-GED, GED and ESL classes • ESL classes offered during the daytime (beginning and intermediate) and evening (beginning)
The Setting • Umpqua Community College is located in Roseburg, Oregon in Douglas County. The total county’s population is approximately 80,000. Geographically, the county is the size of Connecticut. • It is a rural, poor area, with unemployment rates of 12% • We have a small, but growing ELL population.
The Challenges • Time • Affordable childcare • Qualified ELL instructors • Accountability
One Challenge - Solved • Mandatory orientation • Plan for orientation video that would be translated • COABE incentive grant
Objectives • To provide a quality orientation experience to ESL students in a first-language • To increase student success in ESL courses • To improve student retention in ESL courses • To provide a more individualized approach to ESL orientation to support low-second-language literacy learners
Project Plan and Process • Plan to develop a robust ESL orientation in English, addressing the major components of our typical 12-hour orientation, including helping students set goals, understand the format of our classes, and describe our attendance policies. • Intention to find a student worker who could develop video and then have it translated into Russian, Mandarin and Spanish
The Reality • Version one: http://youtube/HbSbsJeQurc • Version two: http://www.screencast.com/t/JmRsVMz9PX
Next Steps • Further revision so that this is a tool we can use every five weeks for orientation • Evaluation form • Translated paperwork
Lessons Learned • Always assume that the project will take more time than you initially anticipate. • Seek input early and often. • Pilot in small parts
