  2. The story of the holiday. The New Year's Day isone of the calendar holidays. Up to 15-th century the New Year in Russia was celebrated on the 1st of March according to the Julian calendar. In 1348 year, Council held in Moscow decided to start a year in September, not in March. Since 16-th century, the New Year begins on the 1st of September.

  3. Old New Year Old New Year is a holiday celebrated mainly in Russia according to the Julian calendar (nowadays on January 13th -14th). It is one of the most famous and popular holidays in Russia. Those who could not celebrate the New Year on December 31st, mark this day to a great extent.

  4. Pyrotechnics The celebration of the New Year's Day in Russia includes using pyrotechnic products: large and small crackers, candles and Bengal fireworks, rockets, Roman candles, firecrackers. Today, many capitals of the world, big cities and small towns spend millions of dollars to arrange a colorful pyrotechnic show on the New year’ Day . The most beautiful shows are held in Moscow, Pekin, London and Sydney.

  5. Father the Frost Father the frost is a fantastic character. He is wise old man with a long beard wearing a long red or blue fur-coat with a stick. On the New Year’s Day Father the Frost comes and leaves presents under the New Year’stree for children who behaved wellduring the year. If the family doesn’t have a Christmas tree Father the Frost may leave gifts in socks.

  6. The New Year’s vs. Christmas tree. New Year is a very important holiday in many countries. It includes a lot of activities, feasts, folk festivals. According to tradition, Christmas trees are decorated in houses. This activity is one of the funniest for children. The tradition unites all the family together.

  7. The New Year’s dinner. The celebration of the New Year means the meeting of close people at the New Year's table. The compulsory attribute of the New Year's table in Russia is traditionally champagne. It's a great tradition to clink champagne glasses with all members of the family and friends and make a wish.

  8. The New Year'ssigns. People in Russia connect their wishes and wills with a coming of the New year. On the New year 's eve, it’s a great prejudice to dress in the best new clothes. If you do so, then you will wear a new dress for the whole year and you’ll be lucky all year long.

  9. One of The New Year’s traditions is not old, but interesting. According to tradition, when the New year clock strikes exactly 12 : 00, a person must make a wish, which definitely must come true.

  10. Even a short sleep on the New Year 's eve is impossible, otherwise you will be slow and uninteresting the whole year. New year 's table should be full of dishes and wines. Before New year comes it is also recommended to throw out of the house all the broken dishes, wash the windows and mirrors.

  11. The New year 's speech of the Head of the state. The President Of Russia Dmitry Medvedev congratulates the Russians on the New year. He wishes the people's dreams to come true, health , happiness and love.
