  1. Phases of the Moon

  2. GPS and Class Objective • S4E2 b. Explain the sequence of the phases of the moon. • The students will be able to label the 8 phases of the moon in the order that they appear on paper with 100% mastery.

  3. Moon Review • The moon is Earth’s only natural satellite. • The Moon does not produce light itself. What is seen is reflected sunlight. • The Moon rotates around the Earth. • The same side of the Moon is always facing the Earth. • The first astronaut on the Moon was Neil Armstrong on July 20th, 1969.

  4. Phases of the Moon Song New Moon Full Moon Waxing Crescent Waning Gibbous Quarter Moon Last Quarter Waxing Gibbous Waning Crescent

  5. New Moon The Moon appears dark, because the lighted side is away from the Earth. The Moon is aligned with the Earth and Sun.

  6. Waxing Crescent As the Moon revolves around the Earth, a silver of light on the right side of the Moon is seen, forming a crescent. As the amount of illuminated area increases, this is termed “waxing”.

  7. 1st Quarter Moon This image occurs when the Moon is about a quarter of the way in its revolution around the Earth. Although it looks like half of the Moon is illuminated, we see half of the half that is facing earth. This is called the first quarter phase.

  8. Waxing Gibbous Moon More than a quarter of the Moon is illuminated, but less than a full Moon. “Waxing” means increasing or growing larger. Gibbous means more than half, but less than full or bulging.

  9. Full Moon When the Moon is halfway through its orbit, the half that faces the Sun is totally illuminated. This occurs two weeks after a new Moon. The Sun, Earth, and Moon are in a line. If they are perfectly aligned, there is a lunar eclipse.

  10. Waning Gibbous As the Moon continues the second half of its revolution, the amount of lighted area that’s seen decreases. In this phase, on the left side of the Moon, a little less than a full Moon is seen, but more than the third quarter Moon.

  11. Last (Third) Quarter Moon Sometimes this is referred to as the third quarter Moon. After about three weeks from the beginning of the cycle, the Moon is about three quarters through its revolution, and the left half of the circle is illuminated.

  12. Waning Crescent Moon The Moon is close to completing its revolution, and only a silver of light is visible on the left side of the Moon. There will soon be a new Moon, and the cycle will start over again.

  13. The Moon and Baseball + = ?

  17. First Quarter Moon First Quarter hits the ball. The Waxings are now on 1st and 2nd Base. Next to bat is #4 Waxing Gibbous.

  18. Waxing Gibbous Moon Waxing Gibbous bunts the ball. The Waxings are now on 1st, 2nd, and 3rd base. #5 Full Moon is up to bat. The bases are loaded. Can he do it?

  19. Full Moon It’s going, going, gone! Homerun! The score is Waxings- 4, Wanings- 0.

  21. Waning Gibbous Moon Waning Gibbous pops a fly ball to right field. The Waxings miss the ball, giving Waning Gibbous just enough time to make it to 1st Base. Up next is #7, Last Quarter.

  22. Last Quarter Last Quarter hits the ball. The Wanings are now on 1st and 2nd base. Next up for the Wanings is #8 Waning Crescent.
