  1. Cornell Notes 4/2/1211-5 Adding Integers Notebooks out and set up in 2 columns Wait for a ruler and strip of paper to be handed out to you

  2. Create number line

  3. What are the 2 different methods to use when adding integers? • Number line • Shortcut rules to memorize

  4. Move right on a number line to add a positive integer. Move left on a number line to add a negative integer. Method #1 – Adding integers with a number line

  5. Writing Math Parentheses are used to separate addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division signs from negative integers. –2 + (–5) = –7

  6. Ex. 1A) 5 + (-4) Start at 5 on your number line and move left 4 spaces 5 + (-4) = 1 Ex. 1B) -4 + 7 Start at -4 on your number line and move right 7 spaces -4 + 7 = 3

  7. Ex. 1C) -3 + (-2) -3 + (-2) = -5 Ex. 1D) 3 + (-5) 3 + (-5) = -2

  8. Addition Shortcuts on Notecard (Positive) + (Positive) = (Add & Positive) (Negative) + (Negative) = (Add & Negative) (Neg) + (Pos) or (Pos) + (Neg)  subtract digits and take the sign of the bigger #

  9. 6 + (-8) = -2 Ex. 2B) 6 + (-8) Ex. 2A) -2 + (-4) -2 + (-4) = -6 -7 + 11 = 4 Ex. 2C) -7 + 11

  10. Ex. 3) Evaluate y + (-2) for y = 7 Substitute Solve 7 + (-2) = Ex. 4) Evaluate x + 3 for x = -9 Substitute Solve -9 + 3 =

  11. Ex. 5) A sunken ship is 12 m below sea level. A search plane flies 35 m above the sunken ship. How far above the sea is the plane? -12 + 35

  12. Adding Integers 11-5 Course 1 Insert Lesson Title Here Lesson Quiz Find each sum. 1. 7 + (–3) 2. –5 + 2 3. –8 + (–4) 4. Evaluate x + 5 for x = –4. 5. At midnight on a winter night, the temperature was –12°F. By 10 A.M. the temperature had risen 42°F. What was the new temperature? 4 –3 –12 1 30°F
