  2. Notes – Combining Like Terms • We combine like terms in order to simplify expressions. Vocabulary: • Terms = sets of numbers and/or variables separated by addition and subtraction • Like = the same kind of term • To simplify = group together all terms that are the same and add or subtract them

  3. Basket of Fruit! • What are the different types of fruits in here and how many of each kind are there? 3 Apples 4 Oranges 1 Pineapple 2 Kiwi 3a + 4or + 1p + 2k Combine only the fruit that is the exact same.

  4. Steps: Step 1: Change subtraction to addition Step 2: Circle all the variables that are the same (including their coefficient and sign) Step 3: Add or subtract the numbers. Repeat Ex) Simplify. -9x² + 4x – 7x + 11x² -9x² + 4x + (- 7x) + 11x² 2x² + 4x + - 7x 2x² - 3x
