Earth Layers • The Earth is divided into four main layers:
The Crust The Earth’s crust is like the skin of an apple. It is very thin compared to the other three layers. The Earth crust is composed of solid rocks.
There is an Oceanic crust and a Continental crust. The Oceanic crust is about 6 km thick. The Continental crust is thicker than the Oceanic crust, about 30 km thick.
The crust of the Earth is broken into many pieces called tectonic plates.
Plate tectonics Continental drift.
Plates slide over the mantle. When tectonic plates meet, they push against each other, or ride under or over each other, causing earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions or mountains. Animation
The Mantle • The mantle is the layer below the crust. • The mantle is the largest layer of the Earth.
It has a thickness of approximately 3,000 km. The mantle is composed of semi-molten rock called magma.
The mantle gets warmer with depth. The top of the mantle is about 1,000° C, while the bottom of the mantle is about 2,000-3,700° C.
The Core • The core is • in the centre • of the Earth. • The core is divided into • two different zones: The outer core and the inner core
The inner core is the hottest part of the Earth. It has a thickness of approximately 1,000 km. It has temperatures up to 5,500°C.(Like the surface of the sun) The inner core is composed mainly of solid iron: the pressure is so high that the iron cannot melt.
