What is Advent? • We hope for Christ’s coming in the future • We celebrate that Jesus is with us and we prepare to celebrate when he first came to us in Bethlehem
How do we prepare for Christ’s coming in the future? • By living a life that shows that we are his disciples • By following the Commandments • By following Jesus’ teachings
How do we celebrate that Jesus is with us and celebrate His birth? • We pray, “Come, Lord Jesus” • We celebrate the Eucharist and the other Sacraments • We pray for people who are suffering • We keep Jesus as the true reason for Christmas
How long does Advent last/What are the colors of Advent? • Advent lasts four weeks. • Purple- represents fasting and royalty • Pink- on the third Sunday we can begin rejoicing in the season
Why do we use an Advent Wreath? • Circle-reminds us of God himself • He has no beginning and no end • Green wreath-hope that we have in God • Candles-light of God coming in to the world. • There are four candles to represent the four weeks of waiting

What can we do this Advent to prepare for Jesus’ coming? • Pray • Follow the Commandments • Fast (from food or from things that keep us away from Jesus) • Do good deeds
What are “good deeds”? • Say “thank you” to the person who fixes your lunch. • Tell your mom what you like best about her. • Give someone a compliment today. • Be nice to someone who is hard to get along with. • Stick up for someone who is being made fun of, or being criticized. • Be patient with everyone today. • Tell someone the story of when Jesus was born. • Give everyone in your family a hug! • Say a prayer for the poor, the hungry, and the homeless. • Find someone at school who is usually alone and talk with him or her. • Keep a smile on your face for three whole minutes! • Tell a joke to someone who seems sad. • Pray for someone who is sick. • Put a dollar of your own money in the mission box. • Do a household chore without being asked.
Making an Advent Wreath with Handprints of Good Deeds • Cut out middle circle of paper plate • Color “ring” green • Trace and cut out 6-8 handprints from green construction paper • Write a good deed that you have done or plan to do this Advent on each handprint • Glue handprints on “green ring” to make a wreath • Glue 4 “cupcake cups” to wreath as candle holders • Roll up 3 purple papers and 1 pink as the candles • Glue candles to “cupcake cups” • Add a flame to 3 candles (2 purple and 1 pink)
