What is ELSNET • European Network of Excellence in Human Language Technologies (ca 135 academic and industrial members) • Funded by the European Commission • Created in 1991 • Objectives • Bringing together the Language and Speech Communities • Bringing together Academia and Industry • Bringing together Langauge and Speech Communities world-wide ELSNET Review

  6. What is a roadmap • A broadly supported view of where our field is going (research, technology, market) • Which should help us (= researchers, developers, providers, funders) to • Identify main challenges • Concentrate efforts • Set intermediate milestones • Measure progress ELSNET Review

Today’s workshop • Focus on CL (i.e. more research than applications) • Mix of submitted talks and invited area reports • Goal: • identify research directions emerging from this conference for a number of subareas • identify the main challenges and milestones • suggest things we can do to make the future happen sooner • Results: published on the web and integrated in the roadmap ELSNET Review
