Getting data Can be a frustrating experience
Finding data • In New York… • CUGIR (Cornell’s clearing house) • New York Clearing house • There is a link on my home page for lots of other data sources • Data is available from ESRI also • And there is always Google
Cugir is relatively simple • You can browse by “text” or by map
NY Clearing House • Much harder to use • My have to have a password to access some of the data • Grad Students can get the password from Dr. Quackenbush • Have read the contractual requirements and sign off on them. • OR ask a faculty member to get the data from you.
Demo • Regular Browse • Browse by map
Clearing House In either case you have to agree not to distribute the datg to anyone else
Clearing House • Has lots of data • But site is not easy to navigate • Dropdown search choices sort of limit how you search … • You can’t search for “ALIS” street data and that is a kind of data I know is there! • Lets see how it works
Kinds of data • Click on GIS DATA
Booby Trap • A lot of the data is offered by Quad sheet – you just click on it • BOOBY TRAP- There is only partial correspondence between NY quad names and USGS quad names. • However, you can download an geographic image of quads and that may help.
Using the National Map Viewer • You can • Zoom in and out • Control what is displayed (layers) • Download the data that is shown
USGS • Geospatial data gateway
USGS Geospatial onestop • Awkward to use
