  2. Why a Communication Report? • Opportunity to apply theory to practice • Encourage reflection • Raise self awareness • Improve individual interpersonal skills • Increase patient satisfaction • Promote therapeutic communication

  3. Key Components • Select a patient • Gain permission • Establish a relationship with the patient • Record interactions one process recording sheet • Select one significant interaction • Discuss the significant interaction using the proposed format within the guidelines

  4. Nurses Observation • What was the patient doing? • Where were they when the interaction occurred? • What was your initial interpretation of the situation?

  5. Nurse Said or Did (Actions) • What did you do? • Proximity • Touch • What did you say? • Interaction opening • Questioning

  6. Nurse’s Feelings • What were your feelings about the situation? • Positive/ negative • Emotional aspects • What were your thoughts regarding how you were feeling?

  7. Patient Said or Did • Body Language • Verbal responses

  8. Nurses Inferences About Patients Feelings • What were your thoughts and feelings about how the patient was feeling? • State how you came to this conclusion

  10. SO WHAT DO I NEED TO DO • Fill in the process recording whilst out on placement in Sem 1-remember to get in signed by the mentor. • Keep it safely until you return to Sem 2. • Use it for your Professional Practise essay – the Communication report.
