A Challenge We Face….. • Figures on Veteran graduation and retention are spotty • Colleges do not disaggregate their data • Those that do may not report their findings
Goals of TRIO VUB • VUB aims to motivate and prepare veterans • to receive a rigorous academic foundation • to enter, succeed, and graduate post-secondary education • VUB is a FREE pre-college, transitional program for veterans • The Goal is to convey to veterans that • they deserve higher education • they can achieve higher education
VUB Services • Academic tutoring to enable students to complete postsecondary courses • Reading, Writing, Study Skills, Math, etc. • Advise and assistance in postsecondary course selection • Assistance in preparing for college entrance exams
Information on the full range of financial aid programs and assistance completing the FAFSA • Guidance and assistance in entry into postsecondary educational program
Education or counseling services designed to improve financial and economic literacy • Personal and family budget planning • Understanding credit building principles to meet long-term and short-term goals • Cost planning for education • College cost of attendance • Financial assistance (scholarship search) • Assistance in completing the FAFSA
Other Permissible VUB Services • Assist veterans in securing support services from other locally available resources • Provide special services, including mathematics and science preparation, to enable veterans to make the transition to postsecondary education
Where to Find a VUB Project • VUB is a grant-funded, U.S. Department program • There are currently 51 projects in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, serving approximately 6,000 veterans • Locate a project at www.navub.org
What Pre-College Services Can You Provide??? • Math and writing ‘Boot Camps’ the summer before classes start? • Veteran only orientation • Early introduction to the services available for veterans on your campus • Early introduction to other student veterans • Other ideas???
