Exam: Expected Advantages • Shift the focus • from remembering facts & terminology by heart • to learning through use (more realistic) • Students would read the book • By the exam, students would be able to “navigate” through the book • i.e. they would know where to find information DFR/B(u)y the Book
Exam: Expected Disadvantages • “copying” verbatim from the book in the exam answers • the expectation that serving up “facts” in an exam answer would be sufficient DFR/B(u)y the Book
Exam: What really happened! • Students did copy/translate directly • Some students brought a “mini-library” to the exam (5-6 books + notes) • Students did not know how to use a book as a tool • use of the table of contents / subject index • Implications of open book exams DFR/B(u)y the Book
