  1. Un Jour à Paris Alice Bell Anderson Union High School, Anderson, CA FINAL PRESENTATION CTAP 295 Teaching with Technology

  2. Introduction This is a French 1 lesson focusing on Paris. Students will each research 3 sites in Paris and create a PowerPoint presentation in French about these 3 sites. They will also complete a written report in English on the 3 sites. This lesson addresses the following National Standards for Foreign Language Education: • 1.1 Students obtain information. • 1.2 Students understand and interpret written language. • 1.3 Students present information to an audience of listeners. • 3.1 Students reinforce and further their knowledge of other disciplines (history) through the foreign language.

  3. My name is Alice Bell and I teach French and Spanish at Anderson Union High School in Anderson, California. My student website URL is: http://ctap295.online.org/~abell/student/home.html My teacher website is: http://ctap295.online.org/~abell/index.html My e-mail is: abell@shastalink.k12.ca.us

  4. Expectations • Learn how create a web-based lesson • Collaborate with other teachers • Create a lesson to be used in my classroom • Create a lesson incorporating PowerPoint • Create a fun lesson which would enhance student learning and knowledge.

  5. Outcomes I learned how to • Create a hyperlink in PowerPoint to my website • Download and upload files to a server • Create graphs using Excel and incorporate them into a website and a PowerPoint presentation I also accomplished the following: • Created a web-based lesson for French 1 • Shared many ideas and learned new things from my colleagues in the workshops.

  6. Successes Students: • Used Internet to gain new knowledge • Used PowerPoint to present information • Students helped classmates with PowerPoint • High level of motivation and interest

  7. Successes (cont.) Teacher: • Uploaded and downloaded lesson to server • Created a lesson incorporating PowerPoint • Created a web-based lesson to use in class • Incorporated standards into lesson

  8. Shortcomings Students: • Seemed to take longer with the technology component than expected (some students) • More class time devoted to technology concerns than learning/using French (may diminish as more students know how to use PowerPoint)

  9. Shortcomings Teacher: • Spent more time on technology issues than on language issues • The whole project took longer (more instructional time) than perhaps it would have if students had not incorporated PowerPoint.

  10. Student Data - slide 1 One interesting outcome was that, in general, the females did slightly better on most assessments except on the written project where the males did slightly better (92% vs. 89.2%).

  11. Student Data - slide 2 The overall results show a marked improvement from the pre-test to the post-test. Also the average (which includes the post-test, the written project and the PowerPoint presentation) shows a high level of achievement (86%).

  12. Summary This project enabled me to more fully explore the incorporation of technology and standards into a lesson for classroom use and to evaluate the results. As I developed the lesson I revised my timetable since, based on past experience, I felt that I had not allotted enough class time for most students to successfully complete the project. I also kept revising my rubric to clarify what I expected of my students. Hopefully in the future my students will be able to complete the project in one or two fewer days as I become more adept in using and assisting student using technology.
