Our Vision The Federal Way Education Association is committed to creating an environment which allows our members to provide the highest quality public education available. Aggressively seeking competitive compensation, fair working conditions, and reasonable workload, we ensure our members a professional workplace which allows for growth and success for all students.
The FWEA Executive Board In Federal Way, members (teachers, nurses, OTs, PTs, office staff, counselors, deans, psychologists, etc.) vote on whom they would like to serve on the Executive Board as their representatives. The Federal Way Executive Board consists of thirteen fellow colleagues that were nominated and elected to represent you. The Board meets monthly to determine the agendas for upcoming Association Representative meetings, set priorities and budgets, work on member concerns, serve on various committees, and much more.
FWEA Association Reps (aka Building Reps) Each school/work site has Association Representatives (AR) that are elected within their school/work site. Sites are allotted one (1) Rep for every ten (10) members or greater fraction thereof. Each month, ARs attend the Representative meetings where every school/site is represented (approx. 80-90 individuals), which is held at the WEA Headquarters building on 320th and Weyerhaeuser Way South in Federal Way. During these meetings, ARs share and receive information that they bring back to their schools/work sites. This increases communication and allows our membership to stay informed. ARs also meet monthly with the building principal/supervisor to increase communication between labor and manage-ment.
Collective Voice and Wisdom! • You are all part of a national organization that consists of over 2.2 million members. We are the largest labor union in the world! • A state WEA that consists of over 78,000 members! • A Local that consists over 1,600 members here in Federal Way! As the practitioners, we MUST continue to have a voice at the table in what is best for our most valuable resource, the students we work with each and every day. Only through our collective voice can we truly affect change in our profession.
Collective Bargaining • One of the major benefits of Association membership is the right to collectively bargain contracts. Many states do not have the same collective bargaining rights that we have here in Washington. Our members wanted to have a voice at the “education table” and fought to get it. • Collective bargaining:Negotiation between organized workers and their employer or employers to determine wages, hours, rules, and working conditions.
