  2. A democratic government set up as WWI was ending • Germans of all classes blamed the Weimar Republic for the hated Treaty of Versailles • Many looked for scapegoats – the target? German Jews • The Germans turned to an energetic leader Adolf Hitler who promised to solve the economic crises and restore German Greatness Weimar Republic’sRise and Fall

In 1923 Hitler made a failed attempt to seize power – he was arrested and charged with treason • While in jail he wrote Mein Kampf – reflected Hitler’s ideas of extreme nationalism, racism, and anti-Semitism • Claimed Germany must expand to gain Lebensraum – Living space • Needed a Fuhrer or strong leader Hitler’s Manifesto

With Hitler’s release from prison Nazi membership grows to over a million • With the division in Germany Nazi’s and Communists begin to win government seats • Hitler promised to end reparations, create jobs, and defy the treaty of Versailles by rearming Germany • Conservative politicians turn to Hitler because of fear of Communism and they thought they could control him • In 1933 Hitler is legally appointed Chancellor • Within a year Hitler was dictator of Germany Hitler Comes to Power

Hitler appealed to Nationalism through past glories • 1st Reich – Holy Roman Empire • 2nd Reich – Empire forged by Bismark • 3rd Reich German master race would rule for a thousand years • To combat the great depression – Hitler launched large public works – puts people to work • Launched a program to rearm Germany and unite Germany and Austria • Both a strong rejection of Treaty of Versailles The Third Reich

Nazi’s controlled all areas of life from government to religion • SS – Elite, black-uniformed troops enforced the Fuhrer’s will • Gestapo – Secret police – rooted out opposition • Masses cheered Hitler’s accomplishments in ending unemployment and reviving German power • Used terror and violence to silence critics Totalitarian State

  7. To build for the future, the Nazi’s indoctrinated young people with their ideology • Youth took physical fitness programs to prepare for war • Forced to pledge loyalty • Sought to purify German culture – book burnings, denounced art, and music Nazi Culture
