Allis-Chalmers Model B Sam Babler
Allis-Chalmers Company • Formed in 1847 as a burr millstone maker in Milwaukee, WI • Bought by Edward P. Allis & Co. in 1861 • Built steam engines • Merged with Fraser and Chalmers Company and Gates Iron Works to form the original Allis-Chalmers • Started building tractors by 1914 • Company ended in Jan. 1999 • Extended through Allis-Chalmers Energy in Houston, TX
Allis-Chalmers Tractors • Allis-Chalmers Co. began creating the most popular designs for tractors. • WC tractor (prototype in 1933) • Model B • Model C • Model CA • Model WD • Model WD45 • Allis-Chalmers Model B • Unique bright-orange color • Weighed only a ton • Drew a horsepower of 13 • Priced at $495 • Included rubber tires and a comfy seat – considered a luxury back then. • Parts were simple and easy for owners to fix
Farmers and the Model B • The price alone was enough for farmers, when most tractors were non-acquirable. • Most small farm-owners of 100 acres or more labored the area by manual or animal power without tractors. • The horsepower of the Model B was almost half as much as competing tractors, but was enough to get the job done. • Simple parts required less skilled fixes for the Model B.
My Model B • 1948 Allis-Chalmers Model B • Still works and used as lawn-mower • Cuts lawn-mowing time almost in half • The beast continues to serve its duty after 60 years!
