Argo Status • 3000 floats in November 2007 ! • Commitments for 2008&2009 seem ok • Global array issues • QC and delayed mode processing • Pressure errors • New products (trajectory) • New climatologies • Legal issues (ABE-LOS) • Evolution of the AST (terms of reference) • Links with GODAE
The pre-GODAE in-situ ocean observing system was clearly inadequate for the global scope of GODAE => Development of Argo : a joint GODAE/CLIVAR pilot project. Outstanding progress so far thanks to international cooperation. A global array (3000 floats) is in place (Nov. 2007) An efficient data management system is in place Main issue is sustainability http://argo.jcommops.org
To what extent have we achieved what we said we would achieve?
Why do we have such large gaps when we have the target number of floats?
DMQC is improving, but still needs much more work New profiles = 310/day = 114,000 per year = 67% of present D-Mode files
Undertake the work needed to ensure that by 2010 Europe will be able to:Deploy, maintain and operate an array of 800 floats. This will require Europe to deploy 250 floats per annum worldwide. Provide a world-class service to the research (climate) and environment monitoring (e.g. GMES) communities. Euro Argo Preparatory Phase (FP7 project) Main expected outcomes : Agreement for long term (10-20 years) : operation of Euro-Argo (financial, governance, organisation, technical). Member States + EC
PP partnership • France: IFREMER (representing the multi-agency Coriolis project) + SHOM • Germany: BSH + Konsortium Deutsche Meeresforschung (KDM) • UK : Met Office and NERC. • Netherlands: KNMI • Spain: IEO • Italy: OGS • Ireland: Marine Institute • Norway : IMR • Portugal : FCCUL • Greece : HCMR • Bulgaria : USOF • Poland : IOPAS
Europe contribution to the global array(fromArgo Information Center) (15% - December 2007)Need to beconsolidated (long-term) and extended (25%)
