Peace and a “Rule”Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brothers to dwell together in unity! (Ps. 133) Distinguish: • absence of conflict / forgiveness in conflict • complete agreement / work through disagreement. • smiles/open to change, not insist on one’s own way.
Discretion • Rule is not an absolute law • Structure, sensitivity • Discretion
Cenobites • Monks live in community, under obedience • Not “sarabaites”; “gyrovagues”: “takers” • “Obedience” is related to “listening” • Incapable of listening, incapable of peace.
Murmuring • A frequent target: destructive • “Do what you are doing” • (“Age quod agis”) • A violence of words • Obedience vs. coincidence!
Mutual Obedience • Obedience is a two way street! • Extreme act of penance? • Rule, 4.25: “Do not make a feigned peace.” • “Do not let the sun go down on your anger” (Ephesians 4:26) • “If you have offended your brother…”
