Studies for GRBNeTStatus Report Annual Meeting 2013 Pikounis Konstantinos
Contents • Gamma Ray Bursts (GRB’s) - Neutrinos • GRBNeT Project • Ongoing Simulations • Conclusion GRBNeT
Gamma Ray Bursts - Neutrinos • Short lived bursts of Gamma Rays ~ ms up to several minutes • ~ 1 / day • Cosmological distances • Related to extremely energetic explosions E up to 1055erg (1067eV) • Afterglow GRBNeT
Gamma Ray Bursts - Neutrinos Classification of GRBs • Long GRBs ( t > 2s) • Collapsar Model • Short GRBs ( t < 2s) • Merger Model ( ns+ns or ns+bh ) GRBNeT
Gamma Ray Bursts - Neutrinos Neutrinos From GRBs • Protons can be accelerated to energies up to 1019 eV • Neutrinos are created by Photo-Hadronic interactions • Possible to detect Neutrinos from GRB’s with energies more than 100 Tev GRBNeT
GRBNeT • 3-year project • Prototype power and data handlingautonomous linear array of light detectors • development, construction and testing • Operating ~1 year in sea bottom (~ 3500 m) • Test Deployment ~ this autumn • Deployment ~ next summer GRBNeT
GRBNeT The detector 16 PhotoMulTipliers (PMTs) inside 16 Optical Modules (OMs) 4 floors GRBNeT
Ongoing Simulations • Sea Tray, used by the KM3NeT collaboration based on Icetray (Ice Cube). • Neutrinos • Generated randomly. • Propagated through earth. • Forced to interact in the vicinity of the detector. • Atmospheric muons. E.Tzamarioudaki, K.Balasi, E.Drakopoulou, K.Pikounis GRBNeT
Ongoing SimulationsGenerated Neutrinos • Neutrinos are generated isotropically • Sample of ~ 300.000 neutrinos GRBNeT
Ongoing SimulationsSimulated Muons • More high energy muons reach the detector • Many Downgoing, some Horizontal, few Upgoing • 7300 Muons fulfill the minimum detectional criteria GRBNeT
Ongoing SimulationsSimulated Muons • High energy muons number as a function of their zenith angle has a cut off around 90o • As the energy increases it is more likely for a neutrino to interact inside the earth. GRBNeT
GRBNeT Selecting Muons In order to suppress the contribution of noise and atmospheric muons to the sample of triggered events, we apply the following requirements: • OMs that have been hit by at least 3 photons, Δtmax=20 ns • 5 OMs on 2 consecutive floors in time coincidence • OMs on the same floor Δtmax =50 ns, on consecutive floors Δtmax = 300 ns GRBNeT
Ongoing SimulationsSimulated Muons Total muons Selected muons Total muons Selected muons Total muons Selected muons • Imposing criteria in order to make sure that we are dealing with high energy neutrinos. • From the 7300 muons 1400 fulfill the criteria imposed GRBNeT
Ongoing SimulationsAtmospheric Muons • Atmospheric muons reach the detector in a 62,5 minutes period • 34.000 atmospheric muons, 700 of which meet the criteria imposed • For this atmospheric muon sample the contribution of noise from 40Khas been taken into account Total muons Selected muons Total muons Selected muons GRBNeT
Planned Activities GRBNet is an on-going project. • Suppress the atmospheric muon background (simulations) • Build the mechanical structure • Design the electronics • Prepare for the first deployment GRBNeT
