  1. How do you use a number line to find out if and are equivalent?

  2. In this lesson you will learn to identify equivalent fractions by using a number line.

  3. You know that equivalent means equal. When fractions are equivalent they take up the same part of same size wholes.

  4. You know that the distance traveled on a number line represents the value of a number. 3 2 0 1

  5. A common mistake is to create number lines with uneven hash marks

  6. When fractions are equivalent they take up the same distance on the number lines.

  10. In this lesson you have learned to identify equivalent fractions by using a number line.

  11. Determine if the fraction pairs are equivalent by plotting on a number line. =

  12. Determine if the fraction pairs are equivalent by plotting on a number line. =

  13. Roll and Race • Play with a partner • Materials Needed: 2 pair of dice, number line strips(copied or drawn number lines of the same length)and a writing tool. • To Play: • Each player rolls their dice. The greater number is the denominator and the least number is the numerator. • Plot the fraction on your number line. • Score a point for the greatest fraction each round. Both score if they are equivalent. At the end of 10 rounds each player gets 5 points for each equivalent fraction pair.

  14. Use number lines to prove your answers. What fraction is equivalent to ? What fraction is equivalent to
