HISTORY OF CARSON VALLEY CHILDREN’SAID • The Carson College for Orphaned Girls was founded in 1917 by Robert and Isabel Carson in rural Flourtown, PA. • Initially, Carson College was just a treatment facility for students with mental health issues. As time progressed and societal conditions changed, Carson College opened its doors to all local orphaned, abused, or neglected youth. • As the Children’s Aide Society grew, it developed into an organization to provide social and family support services in Montgomery and Philadelphia counties. • With like students, missions, and needs, the two organizations merged in July 2008 to form the Carson Valley Children’s Aid, a educational and behavioral treatment center.

  4. OUR MISSION • Our mission is to support children and families to LEARN, HEAL, GROW by offering our families a full continuum of quality services that include: prevention, early intervention, academic, mental health and child welfare services.

ABOUT OUR SERVICES Psychiatric Residential Treatment • The Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facility (PRTF) at Carson Valley Children’s Aid provides psychiatric treatment and support to children and adolescents, ages 12-18. Youth who are served have a demonstrated a history of serious mental illness, aggression, suicidal behaviors, self-abusive behaviors and other behaviors that required intensive levels of care. • The goal of PRFT is to assist students in improving and maintaining their level of functioning while developing the skills to move towards permanent or other less restrictive options.

ABOUT OUR SERVICES The Cottage Life Program • The Cottage Life program at Carson Valley Children’s Aid is targeted to youth in the child welfare system. • Students in the Cottage Life program live on campus at CVCA in one of our historic cottages. • The goal for the students in the Cottage Life program is to learn how to face and overcome behavioral, personal, and family challenges so that they may reunify with parents and return to their homes. • In addition to academic teachers and medical treatment staff, CVCA staff includes life coaches and vocational trainers to facilitate reentry into home communities • All of these students have been referred by county agencies and have struggled emotionally and behaviorally while living in both a community/academic setting.

ABOUT OUR SERVICES Carson Valley Day Treatment Program • Carson Valley School offers an extended day treatment program, 8:00am-6:00pm, for youth in grades 6-12 who live in their own communities, yet are unsuccessful in their current education program and require behavioral intervention to assist them to be successful in and out of school. • We offer structured behavioral management, skill building, enrichment experiences, and therapeutic groups. • A court order is required for attendance in this program.

CAMPUS LIFE • We boast of a serene, beautiful, 100 acre campus • All of our educational, medical, and social facilities are housed in our charming cottages, amongst the National Register of Historic Places • CVCA offers numerous recreational areas, including basketball courts, sports field, nature trail, and a nondenominational worship center • Our newly renovated student center is now open for family visitation during visitation hours, 6-10pm. • We offer after school programs on campus and partner with several after school organizations in Philadelphia and Montgomery Counties • An increasingly growing athletic program with the assistance of our health and physical education teacher. • Summer camps are available for children during the summer.

ACADEMIC LIFE • CVCA provides a quality education to students in grades 6-12. • We are licensed by both the Pennsylvania Department of Education and the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare. • All CVCA academic curricula are all guided by Pennsylvania State Standards. • Class sizes are small, with no more than 10 students per class • General content class credits are transferrable to most public and charter schools in Pennsylvania • We offer a project-based learning to simulate real-world learning • Experiential learning opportunities color the learning process
