2nd June 2006 EBU P/Display Liaison input to SMPTE Study Group on Displays
Mission of EBU P/Display Group • “The EBU P/Display group has been set up to consider the broadcasters' requirements for picture quality monitoring in the flat panel environment, and since we believe there is clear common understanding of the problem between our groups, is keen to establish a dialogue and sharing of information with SMPTE.”
EBU P/Display Mission (contd.) • “The list of P/Display deliverables comprises the following:”
EBU P/Display Deliverables (1) • “What are the user requirements for FPDs in Television Production and how do they differ from existing CRT related specifications (e.g. resolution, de-interlacing, colorimetry )?”
EBU P/Display Deliverables (2) • “What are the application and classification areas of FPDs in production (including the signal formats and interfaces they need to support)?”
EBU P/Display Deliverables (3) • “What recommendations/specifications/ etc. are available today and are they applicable to the use of FPDs in Television production applications?”
EBU P/Display Deliverables (4) • “What measurement specifications and test signals to characterise FPDs are already available for Television production (i.e. reflection impact)?”
EBU P/Display Deliverables (5) • “Characterise how perceived images on FPDs (both consumer and high-end) differ from perceived images on CRTs. This deliverable is first a list of the problems, the artefacts and their definitions. These may be individual to the technologies used.”
EBU P/Display Deliverables (6) • “In what way can the FPD improve on the CRT. What are the advantages of FPDs?”
EBU P/Display Deliverables (7) • “What new Recommendations or modifications to existing recommendations are required?”
EBU-SMPTE Liaison • “P/Display feels that is would be very appropriate to avoid duplication of work and communicate on an aggressive time scale the work of each others organisations. In addition the EBU project would be interested to hear whether the SMPTE or the SMPTE study group is already working on one of the bullet points above with concrete output/completeness in sight.”
First Action of EBU P/Display • Developing a 3-level specification: • control/continuity monitors • Grade 1 replacement monitors • viewfinders • Includes editing/revising EBU Tech. 3263 (“Specification of Grade 1 Colour Picture Monitors”) to include provision for FPDs
