  1. Winds that are blowing towards the equator. Trade Winds Prior Knowledge

  2. Are warm steady breezes that blow almost continuously from East to West. Trade Winds 1. The Coriolis Effect makes the trade winds appear to be curving to the west, whether they are traveling to the equator from the south or north. 2. Early explorers used the Trade Winds to travel from Europe to the Americas.

  3. An area of calm winds found near the equator. Doldrums Prior Knowledge

  4. Are formed where the Trade Winds converge(come together) near the equator. Doldrums 1. These converging trade winds produce general upward winds as they are heated, so there are no steady surface winds. 2. Early explorers referred to these areas as the “Horse Latitudes”, because ships trapped in these areas carrying horses would leave dead horses floating in the water.

  5. The winds that move toward the poles north of the Trade Winds from West to East. Prevailing Westerlies Prior Knowledge

  6. 1. Because winds are named from the direction in which they originate, these winds are called Prevailing Westerlies. Prevailing Westerlies 2. Prevailing Westerlies (Jet Stream)in the Northern Hemisphere are responsible for many of the weather movements across the United States. 3. Prevailing Westerlies were used by early explorers returning to Europe from the Americas.

  7. The winds that move from the poles back towards the equator. Polar Easterlies Prior Knowledge

  8. Polar Easterlies 1. Because winds are named from the direction in which they originate, these winds are called Easterlies.

  9. Global Wind patterns Cause and effects of Heat Transfer Radiant Energy Convection Currents Oceanic Currents
