  2. Questions / Comments / Concerns On the back bulletin board are questions, comments and concerns all ten sections of my classes have about health insurance… What are your insurance needs as a teenager?! Why do we need insurance? Why is it so expensive? Why do people get denied coverage? How can we help people without insurance? …Canada??!!!

  3. Worksheet / Today’s Activity At the top of the worksheet: Honestly answer the four questions at the top of the page …Place your pen/pencil down when you have finished…

  4. What is the Healthcare Marketplace? How can I get health insurance ? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XOkPAANg3R8 Are you confused?! What terms did you not know?

  5. What is the Affordable Care Act? http://www.hhs.gov/healthcare/rights/ www.healthcare.gov “The Affordable Care Act puts consumers back in charge of their health care. Under the law, a new “Patient’s Bill of Rights” gives the American people the stability and flexibility they need to make informed choices about their health.”

  6. What can it do for you? • Coverage: • Ends Pre-Existing Condition Exclusions for Children: • Health plans can no longer limit or deny benefits to children under 19 due to a pre-existing condition. • Keeps Young Adults Covered: • If you are under 26, you may be eligible to be covered under your parent’s health plan. • Ends Arbitrary Withdrawals of Insurance Coverage: • Insurers can no longer cancel your coverage just because you made an honest mistake. • Guarantees Your Right to Appeal: • You now have the right to ask that your plan reconsider its denial of payment.

  7. What can it do for you? • Costs: • Ends Lifetime Limits on Coverage: • Lifetime limits on most benefits are banned for all new health insurance plans. • Reviews Premium Increases: • Insurance companies must now publicly justify any unreasonable rate hikes. • Helps You Get the Most from Your Premium Dollars: • Your premium dollars must be spent primarily on health care – not administrative costs.

  8. What can it do for you? • Care: • Covers Preventive Care at No Cost to You: • You may be eligible for recommended preventive health services. No copayment. • Protects Your Choice of Doctors • Choose the primary care doctor you want from your plan’s network. • Removes Insurance Company Barriers to Emergency Services: • You can seek emergency care at a hospital outside of your health plan’s network.

  9. ‘Obama Care’ President Obama = http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DCQSGnZ0lTg • Why is it called Obama Care? • President Obama signed this law in 2010 • This law was a major campaigning goal in 2008 • Many Republicans are against this law because it has increased premiums (costs) for everyone in the country • The ‘political issues’ caused the government to shutdown in 2013

  10. It your turn! • With your randomly assigned partner(s): • Partner Work – • Briefly discuss your responses prior to getting your ‘question’ • Write a brief summary of your discussion on your worksheet • When prompted, together choose a question (article) you would like to reteach to the class from the chalkboard • Individually – • Read the question (article) and answer the questions honestly • Wait to talk to your partner(s) until everyone is done reading • Partner Work – • Discuss your answers on the worksheet. It is important that everyone has a basic understanding of the ‘question’. • Together complete the back of the page. This script you will be reciting to teach the content to the class. • Time pending: • We will present your question/article today or the next class meeting • Be prepared to read your script! • I will be collecting your worksheet at the end of class (so no one loses it)
