  1. INTRODUCTION • 4G stands for the fourth generation of cellular wireless standards. • It is a successor to 3G and 2G families of standards. • Fourth generation mobile communications systems that are characterised by high-speed data rates at 20 to 100 Mbps

  2. OBJECTIVES • 4G is being developed to accommodate the QoS • Mobile broadband access • MMS • Video chat • Mobile TV like HDTV • Digital video broadcasting • A data rate of at least 100 Mbit/s • Smooth handoff across heterogeneous networks • An all IP, packet switched network

  3. ITU Requirements and 4G • Based on an all-IP packet switched network. • Peak data rates of up to approximately 100 Mbit/s • Scalable channel bandwidth, between 5 and 20 MHz, optionally up to 40 MHz • 802.16m standardized by the IEEE (i.e. WiMAX) • LTE Advanced standardized by the 3GPP

  4. PRINCIPLES OF TECHNOLOGY • MIMO • OFDM/OFDMA • Turbo principle error-correcting codes • Channel-dependent scheduling • IP V6

  5. DATA RATE

  6. 4G candidate systems • LTE Advanced • IEEE 802.16m or WirelessMAN-Advanced • 3GPP Long Term Evolution (LTE) • Mobile WiMAX (IEEE 802.16e) • UMB (formerly EV-DO Rev. C) • Flash-OFDM • iBurst and MBWA (IEEE 802.20) systems

  7. FEATURES • High usability: anytime, anywhere, and with any technology • Support for multimedia services at low transmission cost • Personalization • Integrated services

  8. CONCLUSION • 4G is still at research stage, available after 2011 (?)... ... While the impact of 3G is still uncertain! • Employing the discussed techniques, 4G has a significant potential for capacity improvements over 3G systems. • The Japanesemarket and industries (NTT DoCoMo) seem to be leaders in mobile technologies. Thereforeweshould have a look on their innovations…
