2. Who is Regie Routman? Graduated in 1964 from Syracuse University with a Bachelor of Arts and Science Received her Master of Education degree from John Carroll University in 1977 Regie Routman has over 40 years of experience as a teacher, reading specialist, Reading Recovery teacher, language arts resource, staff developer and literacy coach. And of course, internationally known author. Lives in Seattle, Washington with her husband Frank. Enjoys making jams, fruit tarts, gardening, walking, reading fiction, traveling and fussing over her two granddaughters.

3. What has Regie Routman done? Led and proposed “First Grade Book Flood” in the Shaker Heights school district Led the first literature based-district adoption in Shaker Heights, Ohio which led to establish school book rooms with teacher-leveled books for guided reading Began weekly professional development meetings for all elementary schools while coaching teachers and principals to improve reading and writing practices Been a member for two decades to ASCD, IRA and NCTE of which she has been a guest speaker

4. Why is Regie Routman Important? Well-known advocate of whole language who put the idea in perspective as well as for literature-based teaching and a supporter of “invented spelling” with expectations. Her response to politics in education. Promotes effective teaching and what it means to be a professional Adopted the “Optimal Learning Model", from Pearson and Gallagher’s Gradual Release of Responsibility Model, which she fondly calls the “I do it, We do it, We do it, We do it, You do it” or “demonstration teaching” to accelerate literacy achievement, enjoyment, engagement and independence for ALL students. The institute is built on the belief that for a school to move to improvement teachers must be leaders and principals have to know literacy.

Professional Achievements • Regie Routman Teacher Recognition Grant-1993-Present Annual $2500 award supported by Mrs. Routman and sponsored by the International Reading Association, which honors an outstanding elementary classroom teacher dedicated to improving the teaching and learning of reading and writing across the curriculum in real-world contexts in grades K-6. • Urgency and School Change Conference-March 2011 Led and organized by Regie Routman and her colleagues, in partnership with Seattle University. A small intimate conference where participants can gain information and tools needed to move their whole school forward in sustainable and enjoyable ways. • Sandra Kim Literacy Legacy Award (first award winner)-Spring 2010 Sponsored by the Literacy for Special Needs Program in Seattle University.
