Final Review: Day 1 Latitude, Longitude, Religion & Culture
Latitude & Longitude: Imaginary lines that circle the Earth • Equator 0 degrees latitude; runs ½ way between poles • Prime Meridian: 0 degrees longitude splits East and West hemisphere • Latitude: aka parallels; run parallel to the Equator- labeled with N, S; range 0-90 • Longitude: aka meridians; measure East to West from pole to pole; labeled E, W; range 0-180 deg.
Culture: • Cultureis the set of beliefs, values, and practices that a group of people has in common. • Includes: Religion, Language, Lifestyle, Government, Education, Child-rearing, Art & music A Cultural Trait: Activity or behavior that people take part in of the same culture • Ex: People worldwide play soccer • China- chopsticks • US & Europe fork, spoon • Ethiopia- bread/ fingers ‘ • Cultural traits can be passed down from one generation to the next • Traditions, foods, holiday customs
Cultural Group: Cultural Region: Refers to an area where people have shared cultural traits The Arab world – people write and speak Arabic, share foods, music, style & architecture Japan: 1 primary culture dominates entire country – everyone speaks same language and follows same practices • People who have similar cultural traits • Based on age, language, or religion • Ex. The American teenager
Culture: • Ethnic groups: a group of people who share a common culture and ancestry. Also share same cultural traits like religion, language, and food. • Ethnocentrism: the belief or idea that ones own culture is superior to others
Hinduism: • No founder • Hindus are (polytheistic worship of more than 1 God) – they worship thousands • Each god is part of a single force=Brahman • All things part of same universal soul- stress nonviolence • People suffer due to pursuit of material things • True goal in life = moksha (freeing of soul from body to unite with the Brahman/ keep soul pure- cannot be achieved in 1 life) • Reincarnation is the rebirth of the soul in various forms(can be reborn as a flower/ snake, etc.)
Hinduism & The Caste System • Karma & reincarnation link to caste • A person’s caste is a result of karma (deeds from past life) • Strict social/ religious order • Little social mobility: a person born into a caste & remained member for life • Brahmins- highest caste - closest to moksha
Buddhism: • Siddhartha Gautama: Founder- find cause of human misery • 4 Noble Truths: • Universal Suffering, The cause of suffering is desire , The only way to end suffering is crush desire, The way to end desire is to follow Eightfold Path • The Path is divided into three main sections: wisdom, ethical conduct and mental discipline. • People have to seek Nirvana (state of wanting nothing & complete happiness) on their own (follow Noble Eightfold Path)
Judaism: • In 1800 BC nomadic Hebrews from Canaan migrate to Egypt & enslaved • Moses leads Jews out of Egypt to Sinai Peninsula • Set up state in Palestine • Holy Text= The Torah— the first five books of the Hebrew Bible • Faith: Set out duties owed to God – conduct • Today: A nation in Diaspora(scattering of a people)
Christianity: • There is 1 God- Monotheism • 10 Commandments of Hebrews as Gods law • Jesus is the Christian messiah • Followers believe he was the son of God • Romans overall tolerant except suspicious of Christians – refuse to show respect for Roman Gods –persecuted • 1000s of people persecuted- became martyrs: people who suffer/ die for beliefs • Appeal: to rich and poor alike • Offer of hope and salvation of eternal life • Christian belief that each person could achieve salvation through moral choices- control over own destiny
Islam: • Muhammad= Prophet; has a revelation & Devotes the rest of his life to the spread of Islam • Based on strict monotheism – Allah (all powerful God-) • Islam means “Submission to Allah” • Moral code • Five Pillars: • Declaration of faith: One God: Allah • Prayer: 5X a day • Fasting-during Ramadan • Tax for charity • Hajj: pilgrimage to Mecca • Some consider jihad, a 6th pillar-varying interpretations
Confucianism Confucius sense of social order and mutual, a philosophy=Confucianism. -Developed in China around 500 BCE.Significant Writings-The Analects.
