Blending Of Airfoils
Reasons to repair damaged airfoils • Remove any stress risers that may liberate parts of the blades or vanes. • Return the airfoil to its original aerodynamic shape. • Remove any imbalance caused by disturbances in airflow caused by the defects. • To remove the possibility of compressor stalls and increased TOT/TIT.
Rules of thumb when blending • Always blend in a radial direction along the line of the leading edge and trailing edge. • Always start with the most abrasive tools ending with the lease abrasive. • Do not intermix files or abrasive tools with different types of metals. • Use caution when working with titanium as the dust or shavings are highly combustible. • Do not use a file without a handle. • Return the contours of the blade or vane as close to the original contour as possible.
Length to depth ratio of at least 4:1 Radial Direction
