  2. How to find comparison clues • Identify the unfamiliar word • Look for a signal word… • Identify what two things are being compared • Use this information to figure out what the word means

  4. How to find contrast clues • Identify unfamiliar words • Look for signal word • Identify two things that are being contrasted • Use this information to figure out what the words mean

How to find definition/restatement clues • Identify the unfamiliar word • Look for punctuation that might set off a definition after the unknown word • Read to see if there is a word that signals that a definition may follow. • Find the definition or restated information • Read this word/phrase carefully to figure out the meaning of the unknown word.

How to example context clues • Identify unfamiliar word • Read to see if there is a word that signals that examples may follow • Find the example or examples • Ask yourself what the examples have in common and how they relate to the unknown word • Use this information to figure out what the word means.

  10. How to find cause/effect context clues • Identify unfamiliar word • Read to see if there are any signal words that show cause and effect • Decide if the unknown word is in the cause part of the sentence or in the effect part • Use this information to figure out what the word means
