4. The Spanish Settle Texas • In 1682, Spanish friars (priests) settled the first mission in Texas. • Near present day El Paso, the mission was called “Mission of Corpus Christi de la Ysleta” • Around the missions, the Spanish built military outposts called “Presidios”

7. In 1690 a mission was built in far East Texas. It was called Mission San Francisco de los Tejas. • The mission was founded in the Caddo Nation’s territory as an attempt for the Spanish priests to convert the Caddos. • The journey was very long between Mexico and the Mission, and finally Spain realized they needed a mission half way in between.

9. San Antonio is born! • In 1718, along the banks of the San Antonio river, the Spanish built a new military outpost. • The Presidio San Antonio de Bexar. Many soldiers and families were brought to settle in the new presidio. • A few missions were built around the new presidio.

11. San Antonio de Valero • A few years after establishing the presidio as a strong outpost, the Spanish built a small mission called “Mission San Antonio de Valero” Later this mission would serve an important battle ground.

13. Missions Abandoned!!!! • In the 1790’s Spain begins to cut the funding for the Spanish Missions. • Life in the Spanish missions and presidios became really difficult. Apache attacks were more common and continued to dishearten the settlers living in the missions. • Only a few key missions/presidios were kept open. Among these were the ones in El Paso, San Antonio and Nacogdoches.

14. In other news…. • The United States has won their independence from Great Britain in 1776. • Great Britain tried to reclaim the US and went to war against the US in 1812. • Britain lost AGAIN!!!!

15. In other news….. • As a result of the War of 1812 between the US and Great Britain, the United States doubled in size.

16. The Louisiana Purchase. • 1803, France was at war in Europe, and offered to sell their land in the New World to the United States. • In what has been called “The Louisiana Purchase,” the United States bought the 828,000 square mile territory of Louisana for a cool $15million. • Avg about $0.42 per acre.

18. Border dispute between US & Spain • In 1819, the United States and Spain began to disagree over the border between the United State’s outpost of Louisiana and Spain’s outpost in Texas. • The two countries met and agreed to a Treaty to settle the border dispute without going to war.

19. Adams-Onis Treaty of 1819 • The agreement that the US and Spain came to was called the Adams-Onis Treaty. • It was signed in 1819 and set the final border between Spain and the United States.
