TED TALKS: Tips from someone who’s been there…1. Have a Relevant Topic: People watching a TED talk want to be able to connect with your topic and gain something from it. So first and foremost, it’s important to know your audience enough to realize that what you’re saying will interest them.2. Keep your slides simple: The audience is here to listen to YOU- not to watch a slide show. Your information must not be read; rather, bullet points should be there to remind you what you’re saying next and to keep your audience focused.3. Make Your Point: There is nothing worse than when a speaker is finished and you ask yourself, “And the point of that, was…? Make sure you have a point that you are trying to make, and that you are backing up this point with evidence that makes sense but is still enjoyable to listen to. Every paper has a thesis, so why shouldn’t your TED Talk?4. Relax, it’s only 5 Minutes- Here is some advice that I continue to tell myself every two minutes while preparing for my talk. It is five minutes of my life and the more I relax, the better my talk will be. So for those five minutes, know what you have to say and own it, because those are the only five minutes where you get to show your classmates and parents that you actually learned from all of the amazing speakers that you’ve watched all year.5. Be Prepared- The most important thing to remember when giving a TED Talk is knowing your material and rehearsing it with your breakfast, at the gym and in your sleep. The only way to give a totally successful TED Talk is to become best friends with your script.
