1. • Bob made two solutions using the same solid and water. • Cup 1 had 3 spoons and 100 mL water. The liquid was clear, but had undissolved particles at the bottom. • Cup 2 had 5 spoons and 100mL of water. The liquid was clear, but had undissolved particles at the bottom • Which cup is the most concentrated? • Why?
1. • They both have the same concentration because once the water is saturated, no more of the solid can get dissolved, therefore the concentration can’t increase after 3 spoons.
2. • Fill in the blanks: • Solubility is the amount of ______________ that will dissolve in a given amount of _____________.
2. • Solubility is the amount of _____solute_________ that will dissolve in a given amount of ______solvent_______.
3. • Describe how the concentration of saltwater changes with each spoon added before the solution becomes saturated.
3. • Concentration increases with each spoon of salt added until it becomes concentrated.
4. • Tommy, Sally and Sara each used 2 spoons of powder to make solutions. Tommy made his solution with 500 mL, Sally used 150 mL and Sara used 1200 mL of water. • Who has the most concentrated solution? • The least concentrated solution? • How do you know?
4. • Sally would have the most concentrated solution. Sara would have the least concentrated solution. This happens because Sally used the least water and Sara used the most water, but they used the same amount of powder.
5. • I have 3 solutions. Solution 1 has 120 mL of water and 4 spoons of solid. Solution 2 has 30 mL of water and 2 spoons of solid. Solution 3 has 60 mL of water and 5 spoons of solid. Which is the most concentrated and how do you know?
5. • Solution 3 is the most concentrated. • You have to get the same volume in each cup. Therefore if you put 30 mL of water in each up. Cup 1 has dissolved 1 spoon. Cup 2 has dissolved 2 and Cup 3 has dissolved 2.5 spoons of solid.
6. • I put 100 mL of a solution from bottle A into cup A. I also put 100 mL of solution from bottle B into cup B. Solution A has 3 spoons of solid and 25 mL of water. Solution B has 4 spoons of solid and 100mL of water. What would the balance look like when you put cups A and B on it? Why?
6. • Cup A would be heavier because when you put the same volume in each cup, cup A would have 3 spoons dissolved and cup B would only have 1 spoon dissolved.
7. • Jessica made a solution using 5 g of salt in 50 mL of water. • What should Jessica do to make it half as concentrated as it is? • What should she do to make it twice as concentrated?
7. • To make it half as concentrated she should add 50 mL of water because that would concentration in half. • To make it twice as concentrated should add 5 grams of salt.
