Curriculum Foundation • We strive to create active, authentic, inquiry-based projects that engage learners and promote deeper understanding. • We encourage active collaboration between the media specialists and content teachers whenever possible. • Our media center collection includes materials to meet the needs of all learners. • All MRH libraries foster an atmosphere where learning is not only possible but inevitable.
Goals for Graduates • Become lifelong readers and learners • Creatively and effectively locate, select, use, understand, synthesize, and evaluate information from a variety of print and non-print sources
Curriculum Organization • The elementary library media curriculum is written in units that are designed to meet the needs of the key stages. Library media skills are scaffolded so that students learn how to be responsible library users in kindergarten and graduate from sixth grade with the basic tools needed for research and report writing. • At the secondary level, research skills are integrated into content areas so that the skills are taught in context, not in isolation. Collaboration between content area teachers and the library media specialist is crucial to ensure all students receive instruction on information literacy.
How Success is Measured • Teacher collaboration • Research skills embedded in content area rubrics • Statistics on number of checkouts, passes, and classes scheduled • Collection analysis to determine level of compliance with DESE standards
Technology • Online resources (Gale databases, SIRS databases, World Book Online, NetTrekker, Bookflix, Alexandria) available at home and school • Wireless internet throughout LMC • Desktop computers available for student use • SMARTBoard at the high school
Resources • Storytelling studio and other functional spaces at ECC • Kiva at MRHE • Book fairs at MRHE • Classroom area at MRHS • Generous budget at all schools • Large collection aligned with DESE standards
Next Steps • Promote the library as more than a place where books are kept; envision the LMC as the heart of the school’s intellectual development • Encourage collaboration between classroom teachers and library media specialists in order to create students who are confident when interacting with text as well as technology • Incorporate the new media literacy GLE’s into unit writing at every grade level
