Conservatives complained that the New Deal • Spent way too much money on direct relief • Increased federal control of business • Socialized the economy. Their opposition was boosted by two Supreme Court case that struck down the NIRA and the AAA. • AAA was struck down because of a tax was included in the program. • NIRA gave legislative power to the executive branch & enforcement of the codes within the states went beyond regulation of interstate commerce. • These two loses caused Roosevelt to propose a bill to refill the Supreme Court with judges that supported his policies. Conservatives also banded together to form the American Liberty League • Only the strongest conservative opposition joined this group. • Believed that New Deal polices violated the respect for rights of individuals and property
Liberals complained that the New Deal didn’t go far enough change America’s economic system and to help the poor. The most noticeable liberals that were against the New Deal were the following • Dr. Francis Townsend – he wanted more help for the poor and elderly like a pension plan that gave monthly benefits. • Father Charles Coughlin – He wanted everyone to have a guaranteed annual income, and to nationalize the banks. • Huey Long (a.k.a. Kingfish) – senator from Louisiana who originally backed the New Deal. He was power hungry and wanted the Presidency for himself. • He began to propose a program called “Share-Our-Wealth which Long proposed to redistribute the wealth of the country. Using his “Every Man a King” slogan, he promised something for everyone. • Huey would’ve been a threat for the 1936 election until Carl Weiss assassinated him in the Louisiana State Capital Building.
More Alphabet Soup As the third year of Roosevelt’s term rolled around, the New Deal fell short of expectations so the President launched a “Second New Deal” This was a call by the President to Congress to aid the worker and farmer more than ever before it. • This was instigated by Eleanor Roosevelt who wanted to see even more changes in America. While this was going on, FDR had to face reelection • FDR won by a landslide
