CAMPUS NETWORK UPDATE Terry Gray Director, Networks & Distributed Computing UW Computing & Communications June 1999
A Look Back • Oct 1988: Ordered first Cisco campus router • May 1989: Solve DECnet problem via TGV Multinet license • Aug 1989: AutoIP deployed • Jan 1990: Became NOC for NWNet (replacing BCS) • Nov 1990: Began evaluating 10BaseT Ethernet • Mar 1991: Began deploying 10BaseT Ethernet • May 1992: Dual apex network topology deployed • Jun 1992: Began transition to OSPF routing • Sep 1992: Last host removed from original "flat" campus Ethernet • Oct 1992: Began DialIP (PPP) project • Jan 1993: Completed transition to OSPF routing • Mar 1993: First MBONE deployment • Jul 1993: Retired Micom switch • Jun 1994: Completed NWNET transition to OSPF • May 1995: Adopted quad backbone topology • May 1995: First DHCP deployment • Jun 1995: DialIP (PPP) service finally rolled-out
More... • Feb 1996: First 100Mbps Ethernet deployment • Apr 1996: SNNAP conceived • Mar 1997: NWNet acquired by Verio • Apr 1997: USNO Stratum-1 GPS timeserver deployed • Jun 1997: First fiber between UW and Westin operational • Jul 1997: SNNAP switches deployed • Sep 1997: SNNAP "operational” • Dec 1997: AutoIP retired • Jan 1998: Surveyor net monitor deployed for Advanced.org • Jan 1999: AMP net monitor deployed for NLANR/MOA • May 1998: First use of metropolitan Gigabit Enet (Westin - 4545) • ??? 1998: First drop-in authenticated net connections • Sep 1998: UW connects to vBNS backbone • Sep 1998: UW connects to Abilene backbone • Nov 1998: K20 Phase I complete (9 ESDs connected) • Sep 1998: PNWGP "operational" • Jan 1999: Verio connection to SNNAP operational • Jan 1999: Retired last Cisco AGS campus router • Apr 1999: Deployed first Gigabit Enet on campus
Mistakes We Didn't Make • FDDI to the desk • VLANs • ATM • Various "cut-thru IP switching" digressions • Claim: Staying with pure IP and Ethernet has served UW very well...
Future Milestones • July 1999: UW ceases to be NOC for Verio/NWNet • July 1999: 4th commodity Internet DS3 • Aug 1999: K20 Phase II complete (296 districts) • Sep 1999: First DWDM deployment • Oct 1999: Survive Fall Internet 2 meeting • Oct 1999: Campus-wide multicast support • Fall 1999: V.90 modem pool upgrades • Phase-out last Cisco AGS MAN/WAN routers • Deploy separate experimental GE backbone • Network hardening -especially in HS • First host connected at GE • First VoIP • First HDTV over IP • Dynamic DNS deployed • First use of DiffServ/QoS • First MPLS virtual circuit deployment • 10b2 phase-out • Web-based realtime performance monitoring • Continuous MPEG2 stream available and usable on campus • Availability of 802.11 wireless on campus • A better solution to authenticated network access
More... • Security projects • VPN pilot • Logical firewall pilot • IPSEC pilot • Expanded border router filtering • Hospital Projects • CCA hub operational • HMC: fiber connect, new rtr ctr, R&T bg • Generic tunneling pilot • Regional Networking projects • PNWGP Westin 803/805 buildout complete • Seattle Community College GE gigapop connection(s) • WCI OC-12 activation use: portland, alaska • @Home connects to SNNAP • National Networking projects • Esnet • DREN • etc
Current Statistics • Avg Backbone traffic: nearly 500 GB/day • Peak Inbound traffic: nearly 50Mbps • Doubling time: 1.3 years • Hosts: nearly 40,000 • Modems: over 2,000
How will we use the bandwidth? • Aggregation: more users, longer use • Old Apps going faster • New Apps previously impossible • Enabled by Middleware • Will NetMeeting one day be usable? • Bulk VoIP? • HDTV over IP?
Advanced Services, anyone? • Multicast • Deployed on 16% of subnets • Waiting for new router software • Target: Oct 99, but more testing needed • QoS • Planning underway • Whitepaper "Real Soon Now"
Baseline Services • Shared 10Mbps HD • Switched 10Mbps HD • Switched 10/100Mbps FD • backed by GE switch/router infrastructure • Goal: Switched 10/100 FD for everyone… • Reality: Cat3 wireplant upgrade will take multiple years and multiple millions of dollars
Building/Subnet Status • Connected buildings: 150 • Category 3 = 133 • Category 5 = 17 • Buildings with 10/100 FD and GE backing • Physics/Astronomy (6 subnets) • Soon: new Fish/Ocean (6 subnets) • Departmental subnets: 278 • Shared 10 = 208 (23 soon to be sw 10) • Switched 10 = 58 • Switched 10/100 = 12 • So: 1/3 of subnets (93/278) switched by year-end
Premium Services, Anyone? • Wide-area QoS chargeback? • Subscription ($$$) services? • Switched 10 with expedited forwarding? • Switched 10/100 with expedited forwarding? • Lots of interesting policy and tech issues...
Who You Gonna Call? • For installation or upgrade: • install@cac.washington.edu • 543-5068 • For upgrades, prefer to do entire subnets • Current pricing: • $100/port for switched 10Mbps/HD • $200/port + cat5 infrastructure cost for 10/100 FD
Hot List • Campus building/subnet upgrades • Regional networking: K20, SNNAP, PNWGP, UWPN, CCA... • Network Hardening • Network Security; Access control • Network Advanced Services • Wireless
