Monitor • Used to view your data on a computer • The quality of your video will significantly affect your computing experience • Consists of a picture tube and electronic control circuitry used to transfer the signal to the screen • Picture tube is a large electron gun which shoots electrons onto the phosphorescent coating at the front of the tube • Resolution and refresh rate are important specifications

Keyboard and Mouse • When purchasing a keyboard and mouse avoid the large type PS/2 connector • Test the feel of the keyboard as some can feel or sound different when pressing keys • Special keyboards have extra functions on them like quick internet access • When purchasing a mouse your choices include two or three buttons and a center sprocket wheel • Macintosh mice are unique with one button and a small center sprocket wheel

Modems • Converts digital signals from a computer to analog signals for telephone line use • Asynchronous – most commonly used – modems must operate with the same start and stop bit sequence • Synchronous – “transmit data in frames with occasional synchronization (or sync) bits inserted to ensure the accuracy of timing.” • Digital – ISDN services with connection speed of 128Kbps (not actually a modem) • Internal card modem or external • Modem speed is measured in bits per second (bps)
