What is Oracle XE • Oracle Database 10g Express Edition (Oracle Database XE) is an entry-level, small-footprint database based on the Oracle Database 10g Release 2 code base that's free to develop, deploy, and distribute; fast to download; and simple to administer. Oracle Database XE is a great starter database for: • Developers working on PHP, Java, .NET, and Open Source applications • DBAs who need a free, starter database for training and deployment • Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) and hardware vendors who want a starter database to distribute free of charge • Educational institutions and students who need a free database for their curriculum • GIS users and administrators needing to move their data outside of the standard GeoMedia Access warehouse
Why We Like It • Completely free • Comes with Oracle Locator • Supported by Oracle via the Oracle Express forum • Make sure to sign-up after installing the software • FAST and EASY to install • Took about three minutes to install on my desktop with one gigabyte of RAM • Relatively small footprint • Used a little over 100mb of RAM when initially started • Supports Oracle Workspace Manager* • Rumored that it can be installed but have not personally tested • Great way to get an introduction to Oracle
Installing Oracle XE(it’s SO easy) 4) DON’T FORGET YOUR PASSWORD!!
It’s A Beautiful Thing One can load a table with geometry information and GeoMedia or GeoMedia Professional can natively read the information without ANY database setup!
Additional Resources - Books • Make sure to look at the Working with GeoMedia Professional documentation • Read the document that comes with the “GOOM_PKG and Oracle Scripts for Oracle 9i/10g” download from the Intergraph web site • Pro Oracle Spatial by Kothuri et al.
