The Immigration Learning and Research Network Presentation to the SK Chamber Immigration Research Event September 7, 2011 Eric Johansen, Director, Policy & International Immigration Services Division, AEEI
The Immigration Learning and Research Network • Last June, AEEI held a day long Forum on Immigration Research in Saskatchewan in Saskatoon. • 37 attendees from academic community (researchers, graduate students, faculty) and 16 government participants. • 14 university faculties or agencies represented at the Forum. • Research priorities identified: program evaluation, community programming, infrastructure, immigrants in the workplace, international students, health and nutrition, and better connections to First Nations and Métis communities.
The Immigration Learning and Research Network • To maintain interest, Immigration Learning and Research Network(ILRN)formed between AEEI, U of S, and U of R. • Network works to facilitate research partnerships and knowledge exchange - isn’t a formally constituted organization. • Want to involve other communities (e.g. business, CBOs) interested in immigration.
Objectives • Facilitate research partnerships between governments, businesses, immigrant service providing organizations, universities, and other stakeholders. • Education and training of immigrant service providers. • Knowledge mobilization on immigration issues and experiences for government and non-government decision-makers.
Mandate • To find ways to share and promote immigration research and knowledge sharing. Principles • Knowledge should be shared among researchers, government, business, and immigrant service-providers. • Increased knowledge will benefit those involved with immigration and the community as a whole.
Today’s discussion • Is an ice-breaker in opening up dialogue between researchers and business.
