  3. THE PROBLEM • E-waste - Fastest growing portion of US waste • 400 M - Pieces discarded by Americans anually1 • 75% - Amount of e-waste NOT recycled2 • Unknown - Tons of U.S. e-waste exported3 Student e-waste collection programs at UTA4 • 0-

  4. WHAT RECYCLING CAN DO… Recycling one million laptops saves the energy equivalent to the electricity used by 3,657 U.S. homes in a year.5 One metric ton of circuit boards can contain 40-800 times as much gold and 30-40 times as much copper as one metric ton of ore in the U.S.6

GOALS / OBJECTIVES • Educate students about e-waste… • How their choices affect the planet • What they can do with old/obsolete electronics • How electronics can be REDUCED • Think before they buy • How electronics can be REUSED • Donate (friends, churches, charities, non-profits) • How can electronics be REPURPOSED • Usable parts can restore a broken computer or phone • Where can electronics be RECYCLED • Certified Recyclers, Arlington landfill, Recycling Events

SCOPE OF WORK • Campus postings • Publish/post regular flyers about e-waste / events • Multimedia kiosks • Short film / PSA’s about e-waste and events • Email • Distribute campus-wide emails about e-waste • Facebook • Develop social media interfaces for students • Collection Events • Earth Day (April 16, 2012) E-waste recycling event • Survey • Administer at events to collect statistical data
