The TT7 Tunnel Jura THE PS NEUTRINO FACILITY….JUST A FEW INFORMAL SLIDES Geneva Geneva Jura Rende Steerenberg, CERN Switzerland The TT7 tunnel:
Emergency exit TT7 Cavern Front view AD power converters New building needed THE PS NEUTRINO FACILITY….JUST A FEW INFORMAL SLIDES Side view Rende Steerenberg, CERN Switzerland 8 meter under ground Material access shaft
Decay Tunnel THE PS NEUTRINO FACILITY….JUST A FEW INFORMAL SLIDES • No vacuum or helium filled decay tube available to be considered • Consider also muon detectors for beam steering and target/horn alignment Rende Steerenberg, CERN Switzerland • The available decay tunnel is 50 meters long • Cross section: • 3.5 x 2.8 m2 for the 1st 25 m • 5.0 x 2.8 m2 for the remainder
Beam Dump / Hadron Absorber • 4 meter thick beam dump (none sealed iron blocks) • 65 meter of earth • No cooling THE PS NEUTRINO FACILITY….JUST A FEW INFORMAL SLIDES To be reviewed ! Improvement – muon background Rende Steerenberg, CERN Switzerland

Primary Beam Parameters THE PS NEUTRINO FACILITY….JUST A FEW INFORMAL SLIDES • Exact capabilities of PS and Neutrino facility remain to be determined/confirmed: • PS beam tests • PSNF Simulations (FLUKA) • In any case a design should be based on more than maximum capabilities, even if they would be beyond the present PS capabilities Rende Steerenberg, CERN Switzerland

Present Status THE PS NEUTRINO FACILITY….JUST A FEW INFORMAL SLIDES Rende Steerenberg, CERN Switzerland • A partial feasibility study, addressing the most critical issues, was made and results have been reported to the CERN management • The collaboration memorandum was discussed in the CERN SPSC in April • CERN has shown a genuine interest, but is awaiting a formal proposal to be evaluated • Presently the potential issue for the near detector location (B181) and the present occupation of the neutrino pit and main floor is being addressed. • The existing rough cost estimate should not be used, but a complete conceptual/technical design study should be made instead (no green light) • Complete and realistic cost estimate • Possible project planning

What are the experimental requirements THE PS NEUTRINO FACILITY….JUST A FEW INFORMAL SLIDES Rende Steerenberg, CERN Switzerland • Proton request based on 80’s production yields: • 2.5x1020 for νμ mode used until now in memorandum, presentations and calculations • 7.5x1020 for νμ mode to be added ??? • Correct productions yields can only be determined when final design of target and horn are made • What is the realistic time line for the preparation of the experiment ? • Transport and re-commissioning of ICARUS • Design, construction and commissioning of near detector • Other time constraints will/might come from the reconstruction of the PSNF
