Essity Italy presents a project that produces high-quality tissue paper from alternative fibers derived from food waste. Through an industrial symbiosis with Favini and the Crush technology, Essity reduces environmental impact and gives food waste a new life in a circular economy. Up to 15% of cellulose from trees can be replaced with alternative fibers. This project exemplifies Essity's commitment to sustainability and demonstrates the potential of a circular economy.

Essity for a CircularEconomy’I’m for the second chance’A project by Essity Italy, made in Collodi, for an innovative tissue paper, able to give a ’second chance’ to foodwaste
A Project 100% made in Italy • High qualitytissue paper produced with alternative fiberscoming from food waste(organges, corn and coffee). An industrial symbiosis project, born thanks to the collaboration with Favini using the Crush technology. • Designed to reduce its environmental impact and give a new life, a ‘Second Chance’ to food waste, in a circular economy. • Alternative fiberssubstituteup to 15% of the cellulose coming from trees.
Description of the project • Essity, which has made sustainability one of its pillars, has designed a project that shows effectively how a company can work in the context of a circular economy. • Essity manufactures high-quality tissue paper (thanks to the industrial symbiosis with Favini and the Crush technology) by reusing secondary raw material coming from the agro-industrial sector – for example the orange peel, corn-cob and coffee bean leftoversthat, otherwise, would be going to scraping. • Those materials can replace the virgin fiber coming from trees up to 15% and its origin is wholly Italian. In this innovative process the food waste is given a ‘second chance’ as primary source for the production of high-quality, eco-friendly tissue paper. • Essity is able to both reuse sources destined to waste and reduce at the same time its impact on forests, in a virtuous cycle. • Essity uses this innovative technology to produce napkins, kitchen rolls, hankies and toilet paper, all biodegradable, biocompostable and 100% Italian.
