General introduction to study on Rotifera in Viet Nam Trinh Dang Mau Hue college of science
Phylum Rotifera Microscopic aquatic animals Small size: 40-3500µm Ca. 2030 species Highly efficient reproduction
Phylum Rotifera • Predominantly freshwater, some marine, brackish water; • One of three main zooplankton groups • Food: nannoplankton and bacteria • A key taxon in the functioning of aquatic ecosystems
Phylum Rotifera Uses: • Aquaculture: Brachionus plicatilis group for fish larvae; • Ecotoxicological assays (B. calyciflorus) • Scientific test organisms (e.g., parthenogenetic reproduction) • Ecological and environmental studies (e.g., water quality assessment) • …
State of the art: studies on Rotifera in Vietnam Viet Nam is located in the tropics high biodiversity. has three of more than 200 ecozones of the world.
State of the art: studies on Rotifera in Vietnam Vietnam is recognized as one of the countries with high biological diversity in the world, with many types of forests, swamps, rivers, coral reefs ...
State of the art: studies on Rotifera in Vietnam • Shirota (1963, 1966): study on the plankton of freshwater and coastal areas in South Vietnam, announced 985 species of marine phytoplankton, 695 species of freshwater plankton. To these belong 78 species of rotifers, including 72 freshwater species and 6 brackish water species.
State of the art: studies on Rotifera in Vietnam • In 1980, Dang Ngoc Thanh, Thai Tran Bai and Pham Van Mien published the document “Taxonomy of invertebrates animals freshwater of North Vietnam." The authors described 325 species and subspecies, with the key classification of all groups of animal species invertebrates found in Northern Vietnam. In there, Rotifers are also classified as a class Rotatoria, including 54 species found in freshwaters of North Vietnam.
State of the art: studies on Rotifera in Vietnam • 2003, Pham Van Mien and Le Trinh reported "Research for completing the biological indicators to assess the quality and distribution, classification of the water environment in Ho Chi Minh" and record the most abundant animals, these include 13 species of rotifer of 5 families. • 2004, Nguyen Xuan Quynh et al. published on "Composition of the species of invertebrates in the wetlands conservation Van Long - Ninh Binh, including 11 species of 4 families of Rotifera.
State of the art: studies on Rotifera in Vietnam • In my college graduation paper (2008): “Correlation about density, composition species between phytoplankton and the zooplankton groups (Rotifera) in the Nhu Y river, Thua Thien Hue”. • 38 species were recorded, belonging to 11 families of Rotifera.
Taxonomy and biodiversity of Rotifers in Thuy Tien Lake Thuy Tien Lake is located south of Hue City About 1.034 sq. m Natural lake Almost not affected by human pollution
WORK IN THE LAB OF HUE COLLEGE OF SCIENCE So far, we identified 13 species of Rotifera at Thuytien lake Lecanesignifera(Jennings, 1896) Lecanearcuata(Bryce, 1891)
WORK IN THE LAB OF HUE COLLEGE OF SCIENCE Brachionus quadridentatus Hermann, 1783 Lecane ruttneri Hauer, 1938
WORK IN THE LAB OF RBINS Daily work: identify Rotifera Research instruments: microscope Reseach method: comparison morphology (under the guidance of Dr. H. Segers)
WORK IN THE LAB OF RBINS Identified 20 species of Rotifera, of which 8 species are new records for Vietnam, and one probably new species (Tetrasiphon)
